Have you ever wondered where your spare tire, you know that menopausal muffin top comes from? I ate less, worked out more and my belly fat just kept growing and growing. Let me explain what my body was doing to cause this crippling disease to my ego, and don’t forget to download my Freebie at the end of the post.
Let me first review a “normal” menstrual cycle. You’ve just finished your period. Your body starts making estrogen, you know the one my husband calls the pretty hormone. It builds and builds. After about 14 days of producing estrogen, your ovaries know its time to perpetuate the species. One of them will release an ovum, you lay an egg. Your body knows you’ve ovulated and estrogen production halts.
The follicle, that area within the ovum where the egg was released, releases progesterone. Progesterone travels to your uterus and starts preparing it for conception. The progesterone makes the uterine wall thick and cushy for the ovum to snuggle into.
The follicle also releases testosterone. Testosterone heads to your head and makes you frisky. I mean, God set us women up. The one time a month that women have strong urges to be frisky, she has an ovum floating around. That is why there are so many pregnant teenagers out there that say, “I only did it once, I swear.”
Menopause begins when your estrogen levels do not rise high enough to trigger a release of an egg. What this means is the estrogen climbed the mountain, it just didn’t get to the top. If ovulation does not occur, progesterone and testosterone are never released. They don’t even get a chance to climb the mountain.
Progesterone is what makes us happy. It is what makes us sleep. It is what makes us compassionate. When progesterone levels decrease, we will be less happy, we will sleep less, we will be less compassionate. Progesterone has 360 degree vision. That is why my Mom always knew when I was getting into the cookie jar. We can only have 360 degree vision, if we are in present time. That is why my husband calls progesterone the happy hormone. if we are in present time, we are are not fearing the future, or regretting the past. We are in the NOW! That is where happiness is found.
Testosterone is all about sex drives. It also makes us want to have fun, be successful, be active. It is the drive hormone. It has a very narrow vision. Testosterone only cares about the end result. That’s why your husband told the children,
“You better pee now. We’re not stopping until we get to Disneyland.” He doesn’t care if there is the biggest ball of yarn or the Grand Canyon between home and Disneyland. He is not stopping. He only cares about the end result. Since testosterone is so goal oriented, it is never in present time. That is why your husband can’t find the milk.
“Honey I thought you bought some milk?”
“I don’t think so!”
Silence occurs next. He found it. Your husband can’t find the milk because he is thinking about work, the project, the garage. He may be standing in the room, but his mind is in another room.
So what does all this have to do with menopausal weight gain? A lot!
Research tells us that when we hit menopause, we lose approximately 60% of our estrogen levels. We all know that low estrogen levels and menopause are connected. But what everyone forgets to tell us is that if you do not ovulate, our progesterone and testosterone levels drop to nearly nothing.
When progesterone disappears, we are less happy, sleep less, are in present time less, and less compassionate.
When Testosterone disappears, we have less of a sex drive, less of a drive to have fun, less of a drive to be active. We also have less muscle, because testosterone makes muscle. We start to become flabby, you know the wings that grow under our arms, but we can’t fly.
Since we only lose 60% of our estrogen, but we lose 90% or more of our progesterone and testosterone, our hormones become very imbalanced. We become very estrogen dominant.
ESTROGEN IS A VERY STRONG FAT STORING HORMONE!
PROGESTERONE AND TESTOSTERONE ARE FAT BURNING HORMONES!
IF YOU ARE ESTROGEN DOMINANT, YOU ARE IN A FAT STORING STATE.
EVERYTHING YOU EAT TURNS TO FAT!
It gets worse. As our estrogen dominant bodies are turning everything into fat, it is also turning our progesterone and testosterone into estrogen. You see, insulin moves our blood sugar into our abdominal fat cells, where the sugar is stored as fat. When sugar is turned into fat, enzymes are made that convert progesterone and testosterone into estrogen. Our fat burning hormones are being turned into a fat storing hormone. We can’t burn fat without fat burning hormones.
Talk about a catch 22! Estrogen makes fat. Fat makes estrogen. Estrogen makes fat.
So! The primary reason I got a muffin top after menopause was because I became estrogen dominant. In fact, I had severe estrogen dominance. We used a simple saliva test to discover how estrogen dominant I was. I had an extremely low P/E Ratio. The P/E Ratio is the ratio of how many progesterone molecules I had compared to how many estrogen molecules I had. The ideal ratio is is anywhere between 200-400 to 1. What that means is that I needed to have 200 to 400 molecules of progesterone to every one molecule of the estrogen called estradiol. I believe that every woman out there should know what her P/E Ratio is by heart.
We found that I could not lose weight or sleep very well until I improved my P/E ratio. Once I discovered that I had a low P/E Ratio I discovered how to improve it. But before, I can tell you how I raised my P/E ratio, and I did this without using any synthetic prescription medications, You need to discover if you are estrogen dominant. I would like to share with you the the tests I took to help me know how estrogen dominant I was. In fact, I want to share with you all the tests I used not only to discover my P/E Ratio, but the tests I used for each step of me losing my menopause madness.
We have prepared a downloadable cheat sheet of the tests I took and the order I took them in to beat the disharmony I had within my internal chemistry. You see, we discovered that I could not lose the weight no matter what I did unless I had prepared my body to lose the weight. I HAD TO FIRST ACHIEVE INTERNAL HARMONY. Click Below to see all the tests I used, plus I did them all at home. These are the tests that I had begged my doctor to do, but he told me that they were not necessary. BS!
