Vicky and I spend 24/7 together, and that’s how we want it. She knows her role. I know mine.
She and Shannon, her personal assistant, were organizing the refreshment table at the back of the lecture hall. My local workshop had grown and we had recently moved from a 25 occupancy room to a 50. Shannon worked fast. She had medium length straight silky bleached blond hair. I liked it when it was its natural color, a light brown. She was attending nursing school and was filled with nervous energy. If you needed a lot of to dos done in a day, Shannon was the one.
I was organizing the presentation area. I had a podium placed in the center, a large monitor on my right side and a large white board on my left. Tonight I was expecting around 30 to 35 attendees. 64 had registered online. It was typical for about half or the registrants to attend. That’s what happens when you do workshops for free.
I watched as Vicky and Shannon placed fruit and veggie plates on one end of the refreshment table. There was organic coffee, tea and alkaline water placed on the other end. As the time drew nearer, I snuck into the green room to sit and ponder. The room was nothing more than a break room with a sink, small fridge and a small table.
It is a funny thing public speaking. No matter how many times I have done it, I still get nervous, some nights it’s just a little and some nights, it’s a lot. This night it’s just a little. Being calm usually isn’t a good thing. Nervousness brings about an edge, a spontaneity in my delivery. It didn’t matter if it was an audience of 30 or 3000, I could be just as nervous for either.
Back in the 80’s, I was a motivational speaker. Thirty years later, I look back at those days and laugh. I remember it being so corny, very toxic, but admittedly, downright fun.
“Dr. Mac?” Lana, my personal assistant, poked her head through the door. She had been a client of mine back in the 80s. She is now a health coach, nurse, and my go to girl. She oozed sweetness, but don’t piss her off. She also had blond hair, but hers was natural and as thick as straw. She was my age, but she did not look it. She had remained thin, even after menopause. She was a great advocate of “The Macs” and what we did.
“It’s time.” She said.
Dr. Aston, our medical director, was finishing the introduction and was saying,
“…a board certified anti-aging doctor that dedicates every conscious moment to the pursuit of learning and teaching others on how to squeeze every drop of life out of life. He is no longer a physician. He retired to become a coach, but that doesn’t define him either. He is the ultimate teacher on how to optimize your life. He inspires us through his writings, his coaching and his lectures. He teaches men and women, but he specializes in women who are in their “Third Act” of life. He coaches them on how to look and feel incredible. But I can tell you from personal experience, because I have been a client of his for over 10 years, that what he has to say is for all ages.”
I silently pleaded, don’t say it, please, please Art don’t say it.
“Without further ado, I give you the one and only, Dr. Mac!”
He said it! ‘Without further ado.’ I forgive you Art.
I walked onto the small stage. The room was two thirds full.
When I was a motivational speaker, I used to run onto the stage. I felt like a Southern Baptist preacher during the first show of the day. I also used to speak with a Texan’s accent. I must have been channeling Zig Ziglar or some other great Texan orator. Now I try to just be me, who still channels a little of that Texan’s accent and have been known to jump up and down when trying to get a point across.
I am not from Texas, I am from Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma, what does it matter, a brain cell activates a jingle. I was truly from Tulsa Oklahoma.
Some of the audience actually applauded. That’s not really expected when I am doing a workshop.
You are all here to get menopause help and to learn about The Hope Protocol. It is based off of a simple paradigm that I have developed over the last 35 years. As you all know by now, I am Coach Mac. That beautiful woman.
I pointed toward my wife.
Is my wife, Vicky Mac. I am 60, she is 50. We are the most motivated, healthiest, most capable and happiest people we know. This did not just happen. Like most achievements, we sprung ourselves once we hit bottom. When we met, we were both recently divorced. We had terrible endings to our marriages. There were so many wrong things that happened that were completely unimaginable and unwarranted. Our dream like existences had been turned upside down and smashed.
We know that most of you have experienced tragedies in your life. Unfortunately, that is what life is, suffering. We took a bite of that dang apple. Anyway, we met and fell deeply in love. Together, we traveled up and out of the abyss. What we mean is that because of our dream lives being torn to pieces, we had both ended up completely exhausted, unhealthy, overweight and unhappy. We had gotten to the point that we did not care how we felt or looked.
Since we had both been in the healthcare business all of our lives, we made our goals, purposes and plans to regain our energy, health, youth and happiness. It wasn’t easy. It took a lot of investment, learning and teaching to “get it.” We did! We found that it took the four components that we will introduce to you to tonight. We call these four components the strands of The HOPE Protocol.
Our protocol took shape from my knowledge of practicing alternative medicine for 35 years. I began as a chiropractor then I moved into anti-aging medicine, then nutritional medicine and then into what I now call HOPE medicine.
This is how it all started. When Vicky and I married, we were disasters health wise. My body was so wrecked from life that I literally could not walk to the bathroom without using the walls. Vicky suggested that I get some lab work. She asked me to check my hormones.
What did she know?
I’m a Latin guy, the last thing I needed was hormones. Guess what? She was right. My male hormone, testosterone, was very low and my female hormone, estrogen, was super high.
To appease me, she had her hormones checked. Hers were not nearly as bad as mine, but she had a moderate imbalance between her estradiol and progesterone ratio. I will talk in great detail about her hormones later. I’ll begin with my story.
Another hormone, my cortisol, my stress hormone, had been completely exhausted. That’s why I was in so much pain. Cortisol is also our body’s natural anti-inflammatory hormone.
Another hormone, my thyroid hormone was also very low. My low thyroid caused me to have low energy levels. I also had become a diabetic and my liver hurt every time I drank a cup of coffee. Oh! And I was 50 pounds overweight. I also cried during the Super Bowl commercials and had developed man boobs.
I have no idea why Vicky was even attracted to me.
I was referred to a very popular surfer hormone doctor in San Diego. We paid him a lot of money. We received a bunch of tests and he started me on hormones. The hormone therapy made my pain worse. It got so bad, I could not even get out of bed. Do you know what I did next? I did what most people do when something doesn’t work. I quit the therapy immediately.
Several months later, Vicky and I were at a medical conference and I ran into an 86 year old physician. He had just ridden his bike over the Sierra. I asked him his secret. He said Hormones. I said that I had been there and done that. He said you did it wrong then. He said, ‘try again.’ I did, but this time I used very low doses. It worked. It was miraculous. I retired from chiropractic and became certified in anti-aging medicine, another way of saying hormone therapy.
The results I had were amazing! I developed our low dose titrating hormone protocol with us as the first guinea pigs. The next thing that happened was that we started having clients from all over the nation enroll into our protocol. Many of the calls were from physicians. Not to learn about it for their patients but for themselves.
That is how the first strand of The HOPE Protocol came about. It was all about the hormones. After several years of hormonal bliss, I started seeing that the results I had and the results my clients were having started to wane. As I researched why, it was quite obvious that those that waned first were those that were overweight.
I combined my new found love for hormones with my original love of nutritional medicine and BAM! We opened 7 anti-aging and weight loss clinics throughout California and in a matter of 3 years we filled them to capacity.
I believe that the reason our hormone protocol took off was due to its ability to eliminate a condition called weight loss resistance. Balancing our clients’ hormones, especially their sex hormones gave our clients the ability to lose weight. Did you notice what I said. It gave them the ability to lose weight. None of our clients lost weight with the use of hormones. They gained their ability to lose weight. They eliminated weight loss resistance.
At this time, Vicky went back to school and became a certified nutritionist in integrative nutrition. More on Vicky later.
With the use of hormones and nutrition we were able to change the way our patients felt and looked in an incredible way.
Then as our reputation grew, we started having men and women with more and more challenging cases contact our clinics. We found that hormones and nutrition were just not enough for these challenging clients. It took us a bit of time to to discover why. It turned out to be toxicity. We started studying functional medicine. It is a medicine that treats all 7 systems of the body. We found that the key linchpin we needed to pull was toxicity. We added the detoxification protocols of functional medicine to our protocol and BAM! We had three quarters of HOPE.
Then we both retired from private practice and went into online coaching and found that there was one last strand to be braided into the other 3 strands. In fact, I think it is better to look at this last strand as the core strand. It is the backbone of HOPE. Within this strand we had to educate, encourage, and edify. Before I get into the backbone, let me explain the HOPE acronym:
Vicky had placed a slide that defined HOPE on the large screen of the monitor.
E – Coaching
The first 3 strands, the H O P were all about balancing your internal chemistry. You must start there.
You see there is a paradigm that nearly all humans follow. The paradigm goes like this. Our thoughts govern our feelings and our feelings govern our actions, and our actions govern our results.
As a coach you have to teach people how to govern or control their thoughts if you want them to be successful. It doesn’t matter if you are coaching a high school football player or a CEO of a fortune 500 company. It’s all about the thoughts. You must control your thoughts to be happy, succesful and healthy.
There’s one problem with that paradigm. If your internal chemistry is imbalanced, your thoughts are affected. If your thoughts are affected, then your feelings, actions and result will be affected.
For example, if you or anyone you know suffers or suffered from PMS, menopause or low blood sugar, what happened to your or their thoughts? If your internal chemistry affects your thoughts, your everything is affected.
Where would you say your thoughts are right now? Are they negative or positive?
You see you must have a balanced internal chemistry to have positive thoughts, positive feelings, positive actions and positive results. Therefore, to have a great body, a great relationship and a great career, you must have balanced chemistry.
If you know that your internal chemistry, your hormones, is affecting your life in a negative way.
