Hormone Optimization – Menopause and Alcohol
If a woman consumes 2 to 3 alcohol drinks per day, she has a 20 percent higher risk of breast cancer than a woman who doesn’t drink alcohol.
Alcohol increases estrogen levels.
Remember when I talked about the different paths estrogen can go down after it is metabolized? One path is better than the other.
Alcohol guides estrogen down the wrong path.
Women who drink alcohol have higher levels of estrogen, and estrogen dominance is one of the primary causes of breast cancer.
That is the bad news.
The good news is that alcohol has shown to lower the risk of heart disease in women. Heart disease is one of the primary causes of death in women today.
The research shows that women only need to have one drink to receive these cardiac benefits. Two drinks do not increase these benefits.
Weight Optimization – Menopause and Alcohol
Alcohol contains 7 kcal per gram. Many of my clients think alcohol is a carbohydrate.
It is more like a fat. Fat has 9 kcal per gram.
Carbohydrates have 4 kcal per gram.
Protein has 4 kcal per gram.
The problem with alcohol is that it goes to the front of the line when it comes to supplying fuel to our cells.
Alcohol does not need to be digested. It goes directly into your bloodstream.
The cells will use these easy to get to calories first.
What is wrong with that?
If you drink alcohol before a meal, the cells have used the calories from alcohol as fuel and the food that you consume afterwards will be stored as fat.
This fat is usually stored as abdominal fat.
Think, beer belly.
Also, recall that abdominal fat converts your fat burning hormones into estrogen.
“When you are drinking alcohol, think of it as fat you are drinking. Would you drink several shots of melted butter?”
Liver Optimization – Menopause and Alcohol
The liver supervises fat burning.
What is the one food group that destroys the liver more than any other?
Alcohol consumption scars the liver to the point that it can cause death.
Do I need to say more.
The two steps we have all our clients take are:
- Consume only one serving of alcohol at a time
- Consume alcohol on a chosen day of the week.
Consume only one serving of alcohol at a time when on The Menopause Diet
When you are trying to optimize your hormones, weight and liver, like we are during phase one of The Menopause Diet, drink only one serving of alcohol.
Do not mix anything with the alcohol that will sabotage your optimization goals.

If you stick to the rule of having only one serving of alcohol at a time, you can still spike your insulin.Alcohol itself does not spike insulin. It depends on what the alcohol is combined with.
If insulin increases, you will knock yourself out of phase one ketosis.

Yes! At this point in our program, we still drank alcohol. We did limit it.
Vicky limited herself to one alcoholic drink and I limited myself to two alcoholic drinks. I’m twice her seize!!!
We not only limited the number of alcoholic drinks we drank, but we also limited our consumption of alcohol to one day per week.
I found it very important to plan in advance the evening that we would have cocktails.
Planning when we would have alcoholic drinks became an integral part of our overdrinking protocol that we explain in Phase THREE.
We know that many of you will blow it when it comes to drinking alcohol.
We are all sinners. The secret is to let us know so we can tell you what to do when this happens.

The Menopause Diet’s California Margarita.
We have found that if you know you are going to drink and maybe overdrink, the cocktail that worked best for us and our clients is a cocktail called the California Margarita.
One shot of tequila, soda water, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice.
This was our preferred weight loss alcohol drink.
When optimizing our bodies, mind and attitudes, we found that abstaining from alcohol made the journey much shorter in duration, but we do understand if you decided to partake in a drink once in awhile.
